Description:
Tod Williams and Billie Tsien Architects/Partners with Walter P. Moore, design with an awareness of aesthetic. Concerned with keeping the ‘hand’ visible to avoid a mass-produced feel, designers contemplate how glazing and textures of terra cotta affect the overall appearance.

Presenters:
- Spencer Lapp
- Andre Parnther
- Spring Wu
- Zach Grzybowski
Description:
CookFox Architects and Buro Happold embrace biophilia designing by considering ways a building façade might be used; not just by people but the natural environment it is built within. By creating varying micro-habitat pods, birds will be able to nest within this interactive wall, water can be collected, and sunlight filtered.

ACAW 2021 – Goody Clancy/Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) Team Presentation
Presenters:
- Jefferson Poole
- David Charney
- Daniel Chen
- Rachael Gerry
Description:
Goody Clancy and Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) reimagined a contextual wall assembly, looking beyond just the façade. Using analysis tools to drive their process they explored a façade focused on sustainability, a reduced carbon footprint, while embracing Terra Cotta’s unique manufacturing. Taking cost into consideration, Goody Clancy and SGH aim to design a façade that can be applied realistically to college campus’ replacing the common brick. Incorporating planters, the mockup comes to life with greenery, giving nature a home within our built environment.

Presenters:
- Laura Garofalo
- Beyazit Eraslan
- Yonglin Huang
- Kashmala Imtiaz
- Ian Lippincott
- Elena Marzina
Description:
Thinking about Terra Cotta in its most natural form, the CMU team considered geological formations made up of minerals and water as inspiration and direction for their mock-up. As architectural terra cotta is mass produced, CMU explored the extrusion method along with the computationally driven clay wire cutter designed by Boston Valley Terra Cotta’s own, Peter Schmidt.

ACAW 2021 – Studio Gang / Walter P. Moore and Associates, Inc. Team Presentation
Presenters:
- Schuyler Smith
- Maciej Kaczynski
Description:
Interested in testing the structural potential of terra cotta outside common façade applications, Studio Gang designed a large-scale prototype that investigates the material’s compressive capability. Leading their research with the question “How can we scale-up terra cotta construction and reintroduce past structural applications?” Studio Gang returns to ACAW for a second year to find the answers.

Presenters:
- Stephen Cassell
- Adam Yarinsky
- Neal Patel
- Jenny Hong
- Lian Ren
- Robert Heintges
- David Bott
- Jean Gu
- Michael Mulhern
- Joe Kelly
Description:
Architecture Research Office (ARO) and Heintges, with TriPyramid, were inspired by the organic forms of leaf and vine structures as well as the geometry of traditional diamond patterned espalier trees. Making use of terra cotta’s malleability and replicability, the team aims to create an abstraction of a natural screen on large-scale facades.
