Now in its eighth year, the Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop is the paramount venue for innovation in architectural terra cotta. This year’s workshop ran from August 14-17, 2023, with team prototype presentations taking place on the final day during the Symposium. The presentations share design studies 10 months in the making, from 8 architectural firms who have developed terra cotta solutions for a variety of architectural applications.

Team Pickard Chilton + Magnusson Klemencic Associates created a structural terra cotta stairway using an angled stringer with tension rods — gaskets established compressive force.

Team ZGF + LERA’s 2-sided modular screen system featured glazed RAM-pressed terra cotta units on a vertical rod system for support.

Team Henning Larsen + Thornton Thomasetti + VS1 by Innovation Glass used a white crackle glaze with directional spray to encourage moss to grow on a façade as vertical organic habitat.

Team Selldorf Architects + Socotec halved the weight of the rainscreen by reducing the subframe, forming thermal ridges in terra cotta, and less material use.

Team Eric Parry Architects + FMDC Ltd. prototyped their project for a building in London using glaze that was reverse-engineered from a historical Ruskin Pottery technique.

ACAW 2023 wrapped up on Thursday, August 17th with a closing keynote by Orel Samson, Senior Manager of Construction at Allied Properties REIT. The Well, an ambitious seven-building “mega-project” near Toronto’s urban core, is an innovative effort to deliver density and a diverse range of uses, along with a walkable, vehicle-free urban environment, plenty of green space, and cutting-edge energy storage technology.
