Description:

Now in its ninth year, the Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop is an industry leader for innovation in architectural terra cotta. This year’s workshop ran from August 12-15, 2024, with team prototype presentations taking place on the final day during the Symposium. The presentations share design studies 10 months in the making, from 8 architectural firms who have developed terra cotta solutions to address how the built environment can mitigate the effects of climate change, explore construction efficiencies, and include biophilic design.

Description:

Team Arup created an innovative terra cotta panel system that through a load-bearing insulated core, reduces the typical carbon consumption of a façade by 24% when compared to brick and 40% less compared to a standard terra cotta rainscreen.

Description:

Superkül, inspired by the geometric patterning of nature, used Boston Valley’s advanced 4-axis wire cutter with to create an evolving shadow play with a live-edge aesthetic. The curved tera cotta profiles can be created for the TerraPreCast® or TerraClad® rainscreen systems.

Description:

Using the ceramic cladding system developed for the WasI Tower in UAW as a starting point, team UNStudio worked with Walter P. Moore to create an optimized assembly to minimize the attachment system’s weight and solar heat gain using their Coolest White ceramic glaze system.

By maximizing visibility, daylight, and the fabrication constraints of terra cotta, the team was able to create an assembly to reduce the building’s embodied carbon.

Description:

Team Pelli Clarke & Partners returned to enhance their team assembly from ACAW 2022. Their slip cast modular terra cotta bench design was further developed with integrated lighting, planters, alternate glazing, and a securing system for the modular components.

Description:

Team Behnisch Architeckten — with Transsolar, Knippers Helbig, and TriPyramid — created a modular hybrid system to address thermal comfort through evaporative cooling. Two typologies, rainscreen + shingle cladding, inspired terra cotta profiles designed to spread rain water over the panel surfaces, collecting and storing the water.

Description:

Team Ennead Architects‘, with Werner Sobek NY, performance-driven “System Eau Soleil” design incorporates evaporative cooling terra cotta modules into a lightweight suspension system. The system is base-supported and can span up to two floors in height; for façade application, integrated shelf brackets are used to stack multiple levels.

Description:

Make Architects and Arup built upon a previous project the team had explored together. Stretching the boundaries of unglazed terra cotta, the scalable modular system tests the potential to mitigate climate extremes — like stormwater flash flooding — with ways to capture, direct, retain, and treat water for reuse while encouraging biocolonisation.

Description:

Team Touzet Studio, with Thornton Tomasetti, were focused on a potential parking garage project. They designed a Water Wall assembly comprised of 3 extrusions that creates a rain dance when water hits it and streams into planters at the bottom. The light-colored terra cotta cladding solution could be used at-scale on new projects after further exploration.
